The Wrong Parcel
Bungkusan yang Tersalah Hantar

This reading contains colloquial/spoken Malay in dialogue.
“Nasib baik aku tengok dulu,” katanya sendirian.
Unit B-12-6 hanya beberapa langkah dari rumahnya. Maya mengambil bungkusan itu dan terus berjalan ke sana. Selepas dia mengetuk pintu, seorang wanita muda membukanya sambil memegang telefon.
“Awak Nina?”
“Ya.”
Maya menghulurkan bungkusan itu. “Ini sampai depan rumah saya tadi. Saya hampir buka sebab saya pun tengah tunggu barang.”
Nina memandang bungkusan itu dengan terkejut. “Oh, patutlah! Tadi saya tengok dalam aplikasi, status dah tunjuk barang dah sampai, tapi depan rumah tak ada apa-apa.”
“Gambar penghantaran ada?”
“Ada, tapi gambar tu diambil dekat sangat. Cuma nampak bungkusan dengan lantai. Nombor rumah pun tak nampak.”
Maya ketawa kecil. “Mungkin penghantar tersilap tengok nombor rumah.”
Nina memeriksa pelekat itu sekali lagi. Alamat dan nombor rumahnya memang betul. Kesilapan itu nampaknya berlaku ketika bungkusan itu diletakkan di depan pintu yang salah.
“Saya baru pindah minggu lepas,” kata Nina. “Saya ingat nak turun tanya pengawal kalau masih tak jumpa.”
Maya mengangguk. “Saya rasa saya pernah nampak awak dekat lif.”
“Ya, saya pun pernah nampak awak. Cuma tak pernah tegur.”
Nina mengucapkan terima kasih sebelum membawa bungkusan itu masuk. Sebelum menutup pintu, dia tersenyum lalu berkata, “Kalau barang awak pula tersesat ke rumah saya nanti, saya dah tahu nak hantar ke mana.”
Maya ketawa. “Baiklah. Jumpa lagi.”
“Jumpa lagi. Terima kasih, ya,” balas Nina.
Selepas Nina menutup pintu, Maya pun beredar dan kembali ke rumahnya. Dia memeriksa semula status barang yang dipesannya. Bungkusan itu masih dalam perjalanan, tetapi sekurang-kurangnya petang itu dia akhirnya berkenalan dengan jiran barunya.

One afternoon, Maya came home from work and noticed a parcel in front of her door. She was expecting something she had bought online, so at first she assumed the parcel was hers.
Before opening it, Maya looked at the name on the delivery label. The recipient was Nina. The unit number was different too. Maya lived in B-12-8, while the parcel should have been delivered to B-12-6.
She quickly checked the app on her phone. The item she had ordered was still marked as “in transit”.
“Good thing I checked first,” she said to herself.
Unit B-12-6 was only a few steps away from her home. Maya picked up the parcel and walked straight there. After she knocked, a young woman opened the door while holding her phone.
“Are you Nina?”
“Yes.”
Maya handed her the parcel. “This was left outside my place earlier. I nearly opened it because I’m waiting for something too.”
Nina looked at the parcel in surprise. “Oh, that explains it! I checked the app earlier and the status said it had already arrived, but there was nothing outside my door.”
“Was there a delivery photo?”
“Yes, but the photo was taken too close. You can only see the parcel and the floor. The unit number isn’t visible either.”
Maya gave a small laugh. “Maybe the delivery person misread the house number.”
Nina checked the label again. The address and house number were both correct. It seemed the mistake had happened when the parcel was placed outside the wrong door.
“I only moved in last week,” Nina said. “I was thinking of going downstairs to ask the guard if I still couldn’t find it.”
Maya nodded. “I think I’ve seen you near the lift before.”
“Yes, I’ve seen you too. We just never said hello.”
Nina thanked her before taking the parcel inside. Before closing the door, she smiled and said, “If your parcel ends up at my place next time, at least I’ll know where to take it.”
Maya laughed. “All right. See you.”
“See you. Thanks again,” Nina replied.
After Nina closed the door, Maya left and returned to her own home. She checked the status of her order again. Her parcel was still on the way, but at least that afternoon she finally got to know her new neighbour.
