Tatkala persiapan perkahwinan sedang berlangsung, balai penghadapan tiba-tiba menjadi kecoh.

Hang Tuah tampil menghadapinya.

Pertarungan mereka berlangsung sengit.

Cultural Notes / Catatan Budaya

Bintan to Melaka

In the Hikayat Hang Tuah sequence followed in this series, the Raja and his court move from Bintan to Melaka after the five companions have entered royal service. This is part of the hikayat's literary narrative and should not be read as a precise historical chronology of Melaka's founding.

Seri Betara and Majapahit

Seri Betara is the title or designation used for the ruler of Majapahit in this episode of the hikayat, rather than a personal name. Majapahit was a major Javanese kingdom and appears in the story as an important royal and diplomatic centre.

Temenggung

The Temenggung was a senior official in a traditional Malay court, commonly associated with security, law and public order. Like Bendahara and Laksamana, the office does not have an exact modern English equivalent.

Keris Taming Sari

A keris is more than a practical weapon in Malay and wider Nusantara traditions; it can also carry associations of rank, identity and prestige. In this chapter, Hang Tuah suspects that Taming Sari's invulnerability may be connected to the keris he carries. The retelling presents this as Hang Tuah's inference during the fight rather than as an objective supernatural rule.

The title Laksamana

In this Hikayat Hang Tuah episode, Seri Betara grants Hang Tuah the title Laksamana after his victory over Taming Sari and returns the keris to him as a reward. The title later becomes inseparable from Hang Tuah's identity in the hikayat.

English Translation

After some time in service in Bintan, the lives of Hang Tuah and his four companions changed once more. The Raja ordered that the seat of his government be moved to a new settlement that was being built. The new settlement was later named Melaka.

Under the supervision of the Bendahara and Temenggung, work on building the new state continued. Hang Tuah, Hang Jebat, Hang Kasturi, Hang Lekir and Hang Lekiu also took part. The hikayat even says that they were among those who carved the palace windows. Once all preparations were complete, the Raja and the senior court officials moved from Bintan to Melaka, followed by the five companions, who continued their service at court.

Not long afterwards, the Raja of Melaka wished to marry Tun Teja, daughter of the Bendahara of Inderapura. The proposal did not succeed. Patih Kerma Wijaya then suggested Raden Mas Ayu, daughter of Seri Betara, the Raja of Majapahit, as a bride for him.

The proposal was accepted. The Raja of Melaka set out for Majapahit with a royal entourage for the marriage. Hang Tuah and his four companions accompanied him.

While preparations for the wedding were under way, the royal audience hall suddenly fell into chaos. A Majapahit penjurit named Taming Sari ran amok and attacked the people there. Senior officials tried to save themselves while the crowd scattered. Although he was already advanced in age, Taming Sari was known to be agile and difficult to defeat.

Hang Tuah stepped forward to face him.

Their fight was fierce. Again and again Hang Tuah attacked, but Taming Sari's body seemed impervious to weapons. When he saw that his thrusts left no mark, Hang Tuah began to suspect that the keris in Taming Sari's hand might be the source of his invulnerability.

Hang Tuah did not simply continue matching strength with strength. Instead, he looked for a way to obtain the keris. Through deceptive words, he managed to persuade Taming Sari to exchange kerises with him.

After the exchange, Taming Sari's keris was in Hang Tuah's hand, while Taming Sari had to fight with Hang Tuah's own keris.

During the struggle, the keris in Taming Sari's hand became caught in part of the audience hall. As he tried to pull it free, Hang Tuah immediately attacked with Taming Sari's keris and finally defeated him.

After the fight, Hang Tuah presented the keris to Seri Betara. As a reward for his victory, Seri Betara bestowed the Keris Taming Sari upon him. Hang Tuah was also granted the title Laksamana, a title that would later become closely associated with him in the hikayat.

The marriage of the Raja of Melaka and Raden Mas Ayu then took place. When the royal entourage returned to Melaka, Hang Tuah came back no longer merely one of the five companions who had first entered court service in Bintan. He was now Laksamana, bearer of the Keris Taming Sari and a hulubalang increasingly trusted by the Raja.

Hang Jebat, Hang Kasturi, Hang Lekir and Hang Lekiu remained at his side. Since becoming Laksamana, Hang Tuah's position at court had risen and he was increasingly respected. Yet among the senior officials, some had begun to envy him.

Before long, false accusations were made against Hang Tuah at court.
