Pukul lima setengah petang. Adlan dan Jamal selesai kerja.

Mereka berjalan ke pintu depan pejabat.

Di luar, hujan lebat.

Adlan berhenti.

“Kau ada payung?” tanya Jamal.

Adlan membuka begnya. Dia melihat ke dalam beg.

Tiada payung.

“Tak ada,” jawab Adlan.

Jamal mengangkat payung kecil di tangannya.

“Kita boleh kongsi,” kata Jamal.

Adlan melihat payung itu. Kemudian dia melihat Jamal.

“Payung ini untuk dua orang?” tanya Adlan.

“Boleh,” jawab Jamal.

“Kau ingat aku kurus macam lidi ke? Mana muat bawah payung ni,” kata Adlan.

“Tak apalah. Kau pergi je dulu. Aku tunggu hujan reda,” sambung Adlan.

“Baiklah. Aku pergi dulu. Jumpa esok,” kata Jamal. Dia pun pergi.

Cultural Note — kurus macam lidi

A lidi is the thin, stiff rib from a coconut or palm leaf. Several lidi are commonly tied together to make a penyapu lidi, a traditional broom. The expression kurus macam lidi literally compares someone to a lidi and means very thin or skinny.

English Translation

It is five thirty. Adlan and Jamal finish work.

They walk to the office entrance.

Outside, the rain is heavy.

Adlan stops.

“Do you have an umbrella?” Jamal asks.

Adlan opens his bag and looks inside.

No umbrella.

“No,” Adlan replies.

Jamal holds up the small umbrella in his hand.

“We can share,” Jamal says.

Adlan looks at the umbrella. Then he looks at Jamal.

“This umbrella is for two people?” Adlan asks.

“It’ll work,” Jamal replies.

“Do you think I’m skinny as a stick? How are we going to fit under this umbrella?” Adlan says.

“It’s okay. You go ahead. I’ll wait for the rain to let up,” Adlan adds.

“All right. I’ll go first. See you tomorrow,” Jamal says. Then he leaves.
